What Is a Sports Manager?

Posted by – June 9, 2010

Is a sports manager the same as a sports agent? Aside from the terminology, are there any differences? Actually, yes. A sports agent deals mostly with contracts while a sports manager has to take on a wider perspective. A sports manager works with a player, or a team of players, so that their overall career will flourish.

This entails many things. The duties of a sports manager include looking at the training options and programs. He also needs to keep close tabs on the players in the team, their performance, etc. You can think about a sports manager as having to deal with things directly related to the sport. As such, the sports manager is required to have excellent people skills as well as knowledge about the sport. More than that, the sports manager needs to make sure he is updated on the trends and developments in the specific field.

Is there a specific degree that you need to obtain in order to become a sports manager? Usually, a degree in Business Administration or Management is required.

Types of Sports Commentators

Posted by – May 5, 2010

Watching sporting events will not be the same without sports commentators. We may get irritated now and then with some sports commentators, but they do add something to the experience. Indeed, I have heard many an individual state that he wants to be a sports commentator.

There are two kinds of sports commentators. One is the play-by-play commentator, which is actually an announcer. What he does is basically report what is going on in the game. Important traits of a play-by-play commentator are articulateness and the ability to describe the events in a fast-changing game.

The other kind of sports commentator is the color commentator. A color commentator is different from a play-by-play commentator in that the former needs to be able to provide more than a report. A color commentator is expected to be able to give additional insight and analyze the goings on in the game.

If you are looking at being a sports commentator, you might want to take a closer look at these two types and decide on which one you want to focus on.

So you’ve just watched Any Given Sunday, and you are now feeling so inspired that you want to be a coach “when you grow up.” But do you know exactly what being a sports coach entails?

Being a coach, whether to a team or to an individual, will require a lot from you. You will play not one, but many roles. Here are some of the roles that you will need to play as a sports coach.

Adviser. You will need to advise your player/s on a wide variety of subjects. From different aspects of their game to picking out the right equipment, you will have to be ready to provide this service.

Assessor. As a coach, you will also have to assess your player/s on their performance. You have to be able to provide constructive criticism and offer tips for improvement.

Friend. Coaches are NOT the enemy. They can push their player/s but they also have to be there as a friend at times.

Motivator. As a coach and friend, you have to be able to motivate your player/s to do their best and even go beyond their limits.

Over and above all these roles, you will be a mentor to your player/s.
