Now that SuperBowl 44 is history, the hype and enthusiasm of the sports world turns it’s attention to the Olympic winter games which will be held in Vancouver, British Columbia starting this Friday. Hosting country Canada, looks like they will be making a strong showing and will be competing under the catch phrase, “own the podium”. No doubt with contenders such as Clara Hughes competing in long track speed skating, Steve Podborski in the downhill and Jessie Vetter who was named Sportswoman of the Year for her successes in hockey, they stand a good chance of being on the medal stand.
While we are considering potential winners, we can not forget about the perennial powerhouses of the winter games, Germany, Norway and Russia. These three countries will be certain to make a statement of their own through the efforts of such gifted athletes as Kati Wilhelm, Magdalena Neuner, Emil Hegle Svendsen, Evgeni Malkin and Alex Ovechkin. Ovechkin is considered by many to be one of the very best in the hockey world.
Team USA will not be content to simmer on the back burner. They have 31 returning former medalists and another 84 participants who have already had the experience of competing in at least one Olympic. The U.S. team finished 2nd in the last winter Olympics which was held in Torino, Italy in 2006 and 3rd in the winter Olympics of 2002 held in Salt Lake City, Utah. They are hoping to do at least as well in these Olympics by riding on the talents of such athletes as Lindsey Vonn, Shari Davis, Shaun White and Apolo Ohno.
Winter Olympics Only Days Away
World Cup 2010 Kenya Gears Up As A Stop Over Attraction
There is no event like the soccer world cup. All the others, the olympics, world athletics championship, continental soccer derbies may come close but none ever gets quite there. The world cup is in a class of its own.
For the very first time, the 32 nations soccer finals will be held in Africa. South Africa will be the host country, and new football facilities and improvement of the existing ones are being put up to ensure the country is ready to host the world.
It is not lost on the other countries in the region that the world cup is too big an event for one country to handle single handedly. Teams will require to acclimatise, for the event before going to the actual venue. Countries that share the same conditions as the venue, have good sporting facilities, established infrastructure, media and accommodation will come in handy.
Of all the nations in Africa, none fits better in this category like Kenya. Apart from the 60,000 seater Moi international sports complex, the country also boasts of two other stadiums in the city, Nyayo and city stadiums that are international standard. The city stadium which has a long history as the home of dreams for soccer players and fans, is set for major renovations before 2010.
Kenya is known as a vibrant tourism destination. There are excellent accommodation facilities in Kenya that have over the years been used by the millions of tourists who visit the many tourist attractions in the country. The media here is vibrant. Indeed apart from south Africa, Kenya is the only other country in Africa, south of the Sahara where the internet and mobile phone can be found even in the remotest shopping centers.
Football stars will have it easy here. In fact the top African football teams prefer Nairobi as their first choice training ground. The indomitable lions of Cameroon and the flying eagles of Nigeria have in set camp here in the last two years in Kenya.
Apart from the main stadiums, there are institutions that could offer excellent training grounds for teams seeking for privacy. The central bank owned facility, Kenya school of monetary studies has everything that any world cup participating team would want. Their pitch is world class, their accommodation excellent, security provided by the paramilitary general service unit and its only a twenty five minutes drive from the international airport.
With a little upgrade, the Karen based KC B institute can also provide excellent training grounds. Teams that would not mind to use facilities outside Nairobi, will find Naivasha an attractive destination. Flower based companies have put up good facilities that will only need polishing up for use.
Tanzania have recently opened a sixty thousand seater in Dar-es-salaam. It will also be available as a training ground for world cup bound teams, and its marketing has already been initiated by the Tanzania government. Uganda and Rwanda will surely try to market their venues as well.
The world cup may be headed for South Africa, but Kenya and the East African region are already making preparations to catch on the biggest event ever to come to Africa.
Most Popular Sports Around The World
All types of sports are popular globally, but what sports can we call THE most popular in the world? Some of the answers may surprise you.
It’s no surprise that football, or what Americans call “soccer” is the world’s most popular sport to play and to watch. An estimated 3.5 billion people either watch or play football. The World Cup is the global championship of the sport and this tournament is played every four years. The World Cup itself is one of the highest rated sports on television, with many countries tuning in en masse to watch their country’s team play. Football is popular in all of the UK, Europe, Asia as well as South America. However, with so many other sports being popular, the Unites States still lags behind in their interest in “soccer”.
Next, we have cricket. This sport which consists of a bat and a ball, has been around for hundreds of years and originated in England. The sport is popular in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, some African countries, some Caribbean countries and it is the most popular sport in the countries of India and Pakistan. An estimated 3 billion people watch or play cricket each year.
The next most popular sport is a sure surprise, and that is field hockey, with an estimated 2 billion players or watchers, mostly in Asian countries, European countries, Australia and around Africa. This sport tends to be played in high schools in the United States, usually by girls only.
Coming up next is tennis. Not so surprising, but there are an estimated 1 billion players and watchers of tennis around the world. Tennis tends to be popular in richer countries, including the United States, Asian countries, Australia and Europe. There are four main tournaments in tennis, called “Grand Slams” at which players from many countries play. The first is the Australian Open, then the French Open, Wimbledon and then the US Open in late August. The Grand Slam tournaments tend to get the most attention during the tennis season.
Next we have volleyball. Yet another surprise, with an estimated 900 million viewers or players around the world. Volleyball is popular in the United States, where the sport originated, as well as in Brazil, all over Europe, Russia, China and Japan. Volleyball is a popular high school sport in many countries due to it’s team centered play and lack of specialized equipment requirements.
Also popular is table tennis, otherwise known as Ping Pong. This is another surprisingly popular sport around the world, with an estimated 900 million watchers or players. Table tennis originated in England as an after dinner activity for Victorians in the late 19th century. Table tennis as a competitive sport is popular in many countries but is especially popular in China, Korea and Singapore.
After these sports, we have a triumvirate of more mainstream American sports including baseball, golf, American football and basketball, with each sport attracting between 400 and 500 million players or watchers worldwide.
The Wild World of Sports
The wild world of sports can be so fun but yet so frustrating. I coached amateur sports for over 12 years and saw some great players play the game but only one made it it the big leagues. It is very hard and very rare that we see someone make it through but there are always parents out there that believe that their kid will make it no matter what.
I’ve seen parents put a lot of pressure on 14 year old kids. One time one shouted at his son all the way home because he pitched a bad game, nobody is perfect so yes there will be bad games. People let your kids have fun especially at a young age. Do not force them to play a game they don’t like. A lot of parents want their kid to make it because they didn’t make it but it just doesn’t work that way.
Who can blame them with the salaries professional athletes get these days, well I can blame them because unless your kid has a lot of talent, willing to sacrifice a lot and luck, he simply won’t make it.
There are natural ways to improve the performance of an athlete so please go with the natural path. Of course chemicals enhancers are easier but can ruin your health. Hockey, baseball, basketball, football etc is a game and is meant to be fun don’t take the fun out of the game.
Work out, run, do exercise, take natural proteins, As you can see there are a lot of ways to improve your skills naturally.
In conclusion The Wild World Of Sports can be fun if you let it be fun.
Billiards and Cue Sports Common Around the World
In the United States, we play Pool, which is only one form of billiards. There are many cue sports, but all are somewhat similar in nature. Pool Halls or Billiards Halls are quite common in both the UK and United States, where folks play a game of skill, which does also involve a bit of luck and they wager as well. It is an exciting sport and it is challenging which even you yourself can attest to, since you have tried it and can somewhat understand its difficulty and the level of play needed to become a champion.
Billiards with pockets on the table is most likely what you consider Billiards if you are living in the United States, that is to say 6 pockets, a black “8-Ball”, a cue stick and a cue ball (white). Generally in the US, a player ends up with striped balls or solid ones, while the opponent has the other and they play to see who can dismiss all their balls from the table. It is much easier said than done, although an expert pool player can “run the table” and dismiss all their balls before the other player even gets a shot at it, requiring the first player to miss a shot.
But why is Billiards so popular around the world? In a way it is like golf, without the walking or massive land needed, too it can be played in a bar like gentleman’s setting or in a rowdy setting with folks from all walks of life. It can thus be a rich man’s sport or a poor man’s sport, but either way, it takes talent, skill and practice to become a champion at Billiards.
Disney Wide World Of Sports – Bringing Out The Best In Athletes
What It’s All About
“Sports competition… to rise above all others…to experience excitement…to feel the rush…to entertain and be entertained…sheer passion.” These phrases are some of the answers to the question, ‘why do you love to watch or play sports.’ And Disney knows these things. And probably these are the same reasons for the construction of the Disney Wide World of Sports. To cater to the public who thirst for the thrill of the game, to catch the moment and to live the dream. With the facilities that the sports complex presents, it’s not farfetched that you’ll see a sports enthusiast develop into a pro.
From basketball courts to baseball fields, from tennis courts to sand volleyball—these are housed within the sports ground that is the Disney Wide World of Sports. Such place has been a host for various professional sporting events and will be a host for many more.
What to See Inside
First stop, the Champion Stadium. Boasting a seating capacity of 9,500, this has been a host to countless baseball games including the first round of games of the World Baseball Classic for the year 2006.
Hess Sports Field. Houses 8 different fields used for football, soccer, lacrosse and field hockey to name a few. The complex started with four fields but same has doubled since then. And it was on the summer of 2004 that the expansion was realized. With each field measuring 240ft x 360ft, there’s no wonder why Hess Field hosts the annual Tampa Bay Buccaneers Training Camp.
Milkhouse. Got milk? This is the same company that sponsored such fieldhouse. The Milkhouse has the capacity to host any indoor sport that need not require ice like volleyball, wrestling, martial arts and even cheerdancing. With a capacity of 5,500, this facility can accommodate the usual trade show events, conventions and graduations too.
The extension of the Champion Stadium is the Baseball Quadraplex. The latter contains 4 professional baseball fields. During spring, the quad gets a lot of traffic from the Major League Baseball players. As for the athletes of the minor league, their turn to use the quad is during the Rookie League. However, this one is quite small. Its C Field can accommodate 500 while Fields A, B and D can only support 250 sports aficionados.
Track and Field Complex. World class-this is the word that best describes this place and its facilities. With the land covered with nine 48-inch lanes, two high jump areas, javelin runway and a two directional pole vault runway, this is certainly top notch. For the equipment, well, let’s see, 200 Olympic style hurdles, two high jump pits, 18 shot puts, 12 javelins, countdown timers, performance indicators—the list goes on.
These are just a few of the areas that make Disney Wide World of Sports a favorite, whether you’re an athlete or a fan. This place will dish up competition and camaraderie the Disney way.
Which Are the Most Popular Sports?
There’s an age old debate about which sports have the most participants or attract the most spectators. We take a look at some statistics to see if we can find the answers.
Judging from the number of followers of the game, football (soccer) is the most popular sport of all. With more than 3 billion fans worldwide this is the sport that dominates all others.
Estimates suggest that the last football World Cup final was watched live by almost 1 billion people – a quite astonishing figure. In the UK alone there are almost 50,000 registered football clubs, with up to 3 million participants.
Leading football clubs attract attendances of considerably more than 50,000 spectators on a regular basis, with the Spanish heavyweights of Real Madrid and Barcelona often drawing massive crowds.
Football truly is the global game.
Next up in the listings is a sport that might surprise many: cricket. Although cricket seems to have failed to have caught the imagination in large parts of the world (North America, China and South America being examples), participation and viewing figures are extremely high.
These figures are largely boosted by the popularity of the sport in Asia, where India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are all significant cricketing nations.
Elsewhere in the world, England, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and the West Indies all have international cricket teams, while the sport is growing in some parts of continental Europe (notably the Netherlands and Denmark).
The third most popular sport in the world is harder to judge, with figures conflicting. Some suggest basketball, undoubtedly the American sport with the largest global appeal.
Other leading contenders include tennis, field hockey (once again, a sport that has enormous appeal in the Indian sub-continent) and swimming.
A recent report in the UK suggested that the largest sports, in terms of participants, were walking and fishing. Although walking by not be classed as a sport by many, the inclusion of fishing on such a list may come as a surprise.
Though there is little agreement and such things are difficult to measure, it seems undeniable that football (soccer) remains the world’s most popular sport.
The Unique Approach of Wakeboarding Into the World of Sports
One of the best options to maintain a healthy and physically fit body is by engaging in sports. It has the ability to strengthen your bones. It also burns your fats and maintains the normal flow of your blood. Sports can develop your muscles and even your immune system. It enhances the coordination of your body towards your actions. It is also a great avenue to spend your spare time. You will also develop a high degree of discipline once you learn to follow the instructions of your coach. Although popularity and fame are the additional benefits of being inclined to sports, you must remain humble and maintain the spirit of sportsmanship within you.
There are different forms of sports that will surely suit your taste. Most of the psychologists believe that the personality of a person largely affects his or her preference of sports. Witty and intelligent individuals often engage themselves in a sport that will enhance their mental strength such as playing chess. Meanwhile individuals inclined in physical activities often focus on joining sports such track and field.
Your different preferences as a person in terms of socialization is also one of the factors that will you determine what type of sport will fit you. Individual and group or team sports differ markedly in terms of cooperation and trust. If you are coach, it usually difficult to handle a group with multiple members than to handle a single individual alone, because you have to make them trust their teammates first before you can make them join a competition.
Wakeboarding is one of the famous sports nowadays. It is an individual form of sports which are usually held in beaches with large waves. The rhythm and the balance of the player certainly depend on the waves created by the sea. Although professional wake boarders are already expert in doing tricks during the contest it is still very difficult to take chances and risks.
Wakeboarding originated from water skiing. Nowadays it is a combination of snowboarding, water skiing and surfing. A player can only perform wakeboarding once he or she has managed to float and remain standing over the surface of the water. You need to remain still in order for you to maintain you balance while riding a board.
A person who performs wakeboarding must first have a wake board and a fast boat. It must be buoyant enough for the player. Most of the centers of the boards are composed of foams. It has the ability to balance the water the movement of the water without losing your control over your board.
For safety purposes, a metal screw is used to put together the bindings and the fins of your board. You can eventually change the design or the place where you wish to put your fins. The fin in your board is the one responsible that allows you to do some extra and exciting tricks. A shallow fine is usually good in surface tricks such as the flat spin.
Naked Supporters of Extremal Sports Conquer the World
They parachute and hang-glide, climb the highest tops of the world and go down to the sea bottom. We have already got used to the fact, that in chase of the adrenaline people commit reckless deeds. Though, some of them prefer to do this naked.
Recently, nudists and naturists of all kinds are dynamically conquering their places in the sun, trying to obtain the right to exist without stupid flaps of “textile” on the body. That is why there are left so little sports where the “people without clothes” haven’t registered themselves. Among the most harmless for the health (though not for the others’ psychics) entertainments – are the bike rides. In many Western countries there is even held a World naked race. Supposedly, there are considerable penalty charges for rowdiness and disorderly conduct hanging upon them, but local authorities are unable to withstand the public opinion of a big crowd of naked people: usually police does not arrest the sportsmen, but to the contrary protects them on the way of their movement.
A widespread entertainment among the naturists is alpinism and mountain climbing. The majority of them describe their not quite traditional hobby like this: to be left all alone in the mountains and to join with nature, to soar above the earth and neighboring cliffs on a thin rope, to feel an unearthly delight, getting almost to the skies. Such an entertainment is acknowledged not by everybody. When the crowds of naked people literally filled the slopes of Everest, the local residents have rebelled against it. That is why at the end of the last year the Nepalese authorities even claimed that they are going to interdict by the law to conquer the highest peak in the world, which is also considered to be holy here, to the people with indecent appearance. Doctors also make their bit, convincing everybody in the malignancy of such entertainments: health is more valuable than the freedom of clothes. After their heroic deeds in the mountains nudists consult doctors, complaining on severe solar burns (regardless of their attitude towards the clothing, it still saves, even though partially, from sun beams). At that, gentle and used to be covered genitals – burn first and in this case all can lead to the oncological diseases. It is pleasant to walk barefoot, though it can lead to the damages of the feet, bites of insects and snakes.
The naturists-parachutists are getting even higher. In order to feel the unity with nature they are ready to suffer a lot: the harsh belts wimble into the skin, different, usually covered body parts are literally throbbing in the wind, the body freezes from the sky cold, not speaking about the landing, which is not always pleasant in the clothing, and without it – even more.
To swim naked in the sea waters – it is probably understandable for all the people not considering themselves to be nudists. But why should anybody dive nude with an aqualung in peril of hurting oneself by the fish fins and corals, of being stung or bitten by the inhabitants of the bosom of the sea? As said by the participants of such dives, they do it in order to feel an unbelievable freedom, which can be felt only when swimming in the ocean waters without anything, just with an air tank on the back. In order to share the experience and to arrange such dives there are even special clubs for “naked divers” created. It will be all right, if the nude extremals do it only in the warm waters. But no, there are also ice swimmers among the lovers of the nude way of life, who in winter, during the hard Siberian frosts dive mother-naked in the ice-holes. When being asked, why this should be done without underwear, they answer that first of all, it is even colder in a swim suit, and secondly, one can become frozen stiff while putting it on and taking it of.
The swimming in an ice-hole among the ice floes is not the only winter entertainment of the nudists and naturists. You could probably see some of them even at Portes du Soleil – The Sun Gate, which is a kind of Mecca for the winter sport lovers. The lovers of life without clothes are attracted by such seemingly unsuitable sports like snowboard and mountain skis. Moreover, there are even competitions held on the “nude” freeride, freestyle, slalom and other varieties. Such supporter of extremal sports slides down the slope, nimbly driving round the obstacles and it is even frightful to imagine, what will happen if he mistakes and comes a smasher on a very high speed, scraping the tender skin against the rough, thorny snow. It is clear that this alpine skiing entertainments are becoming more traumatic for the naked people.
Of course, nothing human is alien to the nudists; they just want to live their lives and to do what other people do, just not wearing clothes. Naturists are also conquering more and more space in our world, making us acknowledge their right to the freedom of self-expression. At that, more and more often they overcome the boundaries of their reservations, enter the “world” shocking the adults and frightening the children, making no thoughts on the right of the majority not to see their naked ‘beauties.’
Well, if you respect the feeling of other people more than your personal wishes and philosophy, you would probably be ready to read a short guide with things that a traveler should know before visiting a specific country. These are tourist taboos that should be obeyed so that the behavior of the tourist does not offend the local inhabitants.
Tips for Success in the World’s First Sports Stock Market
The AllSportsMarket is a financial exchange using a professional trading platform to buy and sell issues of sports teams. It is just like the stock market, but with sports teams! You compete with other players for real money. Money is earned from the ups and downs of the prices of teams and from dividends paid when teams win. The AllSportsMarket is 24 hours, 365 days a year – you can trade at anytime and as often as you would like.
You can fund an account for as little as $25 or try the “no catch guest entry” to check out the user interface. Unlike the stock market, where you need a hefty upfront amount to get started, and gambling where you can lose all your money at once, you can start off with a minuscule amount of money and not lose it all in one shot.
Buy Low and Sell High
Just like the stock market, you make money off of the ups and downs of the underlying security. In the case of the AllSportsMarket, the security is the issue of the team. Buying shares with the intention of selling them later at a higher price to make a profit is called long. In ASM, you make the difference minus the total commissions you pay.
This is the simplest way to make your gains, but it does take some timing and patience. The big question is what do you consider high low? A good thing to look at is the prices of the rest of the teams in the league. You should expect that the better teams will have higher prices, but there will be the occasional discrepancies for one reason or another. With that said, you have a range of prices and you should look to buy good teams that are in the low price range. Do as much research as possible to find out what teams are being undervalued.
Dividends
Another way to make money (and one of the keys to success in ASM) is dividend payouts. Every game your team wins, the dividend pot grows. You are paid dividends based on league specific pay outs and payout schedules.
The dividend strategy is an approach to make gains from dividend payouts. This is where you buy shares of a team specifically to capture the dividend payout. There are different dividend payout schedules depending on the league you own shares in. The teams that have higher dividend reserves pay higher dividends. Dividend reserves change from game-to-game depending on the leagues specific rules of dividend transfers for the winner and loser of the game. In the trading platform they list the highest dividend reserves (see the figure on the right).
Dividends are great in the sense that they reward for choosing winning teams. For example, over the course of a long season, the Detroit Pistons will likely win more than they lose, and will therefore pay out a good amount of dividends.
You need to be careful when buying shares solely for dividends – the share price may go down leaving you with a net loss even after you capture the dividend.
Selling Short
You can also make money selling short. This involves borrowing a share and selling it expecting the share to decline in price so you can buy it back at a lower price. Selling short can be more risky due the fact that you can lose more than what you put in since the price has an unlimited upside potential. When you long, the stock can only go as low as $0.00 and you only lose as much as you put in. When you short you could lose what you put in and more.
